General Information

ADA

It is the policy of the AOBEM to provide appropriate accommodations for candidates who are "disabled" as that term is defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA"). All required documentation must be provided in a timely manner to the AOBEM by or for the candidate. Prior accommodation does not necessarily guarantee an ADA accommodation for any future examination.

In order for a candidate to be considered for an appropriate accommodation, they MUST do the following:

  1. The candidate MUST register for and schedule their Formal Recertification Examination (FRCE) through the AOBEM offices in Chicago directly by phone (312-335-1065).

  2. Applicants for an ADA accommodation MUST complete and file an application form that is available for download for the AOBEM website at www.aobem.org.

  3. The candidate MUST complete the required ADA accommodation application and supply appropriate documentation at the time of application for the FRCE.

  4. Documentation MUST be current according to standards established by the AOBEM.

ADA candidates can register, but may not schedule an accommodated examination until their requested accommodation has been approved by the AOBEM.  ADA candidates are strongly advised to submit their accommodation requests early and to provide all necessary documentation to receive consideration for their accommodations. Review of applications may take up to 12 weeks in some instances.

Though as an accommodation under the ADA, the AOBEM may in an appropriate case provide extended time for a candidate to complete the recertification exam, the AOBEM may annotate the candidate’s Score Report, transcript and other documentation to indicate his or her examination was administered under non-standard conditions, because it has not been determined that a score produced by time-accommodated examination is comparable to the scores produced for the same examination administered under standard conditions.

ADA candidates are advised to check the AOBEM website at www.aobem.org or contact the AOBEM directly for the most current policies and information
